Local Review: Star on the Mountain Production Company's "The Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler

Every February, there is always a production of The Vagina Monologues happening somewhere in town. I had always been aware they were happening, but I had never personally attended a production of Eve Ensler's series of monologues for women. This year, that changed when I attended a performance of Star on the Mountain's Production Company's production of The Vagina Monologues at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in El Paso.

The monologues, performed by each of the eight women in the cast, are truly beautiful. The Vagina Monologues is not a typical piece of theatre, it is simply these women standing before an audience and telling these stories that can be funny, sentimental, and heart wrenching. Each of the women in the cast was truly unique and memorable. The genius women who performed the monologues were Karla Baylon, Shelby Harper, Emily James, Kate Keyser, Aurolyn Luykx, Victoria Molinar, Meagan O'Toole-Pitts, and Lupita Peña.

The Vagina Monologues  is an important piece that I think everyone should see at least once in their lives. It is insightful and important. It is stated at the beginning of the show that each of the monologues is based on the real life experiences of women and it is truly breathtaking to listen to each of these extremely talented women speak from such personal places, although the stories they tell are not their own. It is an important show to watch and it is an important show to produce. To conclude this quick review, I would like to say that it is safe to assume that I will be in the audience of The Vagina Monologues the next time it is produced. I applaud everyone who was involved in this production for producing a show with real social commentary and for empowering women with these monologues in a time where we need it.
