Local Review: "American Idiot" at EPCC

Tonight, I saw the El Paso Community College production of "American Idiot". I saw the touring production of this show almost 2 years ago now, and I don't remember it being so GOD AWFUL.

Its not really this specific production, I could see any production of this show and say that it is a HORRIBLE SHOW! The plot is everywhere, the music is meh, and there's so many elements to the show that are pointless and weird. After a couple songs, I hated it.

The plot to "American Idiot" as interpreted by Justin: "So it is about these guys who go into the military, but then they get hurt and there is also this pregnant girl and a whole line up of characters that have nothing to do with anything".

It's not the people onstage,  it's really not. There is a lot of talent on that stage but their talent is so misused, Most of that is because the sound ruined it for them. Everyone was extremely talented, but no one really stood out. A lot of the characters are really pointless, such as that pregnant girl. Her character didn't really contribute anything to the plot. There are also a lot of characters that I can't even remember, looking at the program.

It's really hard to talk about the cast mostly because the plot was so horribly confusing that I can't remember which character was which.

The worst part about the show as a whole is the plot and most of the music. The plot is so hard to follow and it is a weird plot. There are only 2 songs that I can say I liked and those are "21 Guns" and "Good Riddance". Everything else was bad.

Onto things that this production did wrong:
-There was a scene where all of the guys were in their underwear and it was pointless and stupid. That scene was not in the Broadway or Touring versions of the show, I guess they couldn't decide if they wanted to "Hair" or "American Idiot", so they did both.
    - There was a part where it just started snowing onstage and again, it was pointless and stupid
    -  It was in 2 acts,  "American Idiot" is a one act show
    - They did this show

When it comes to the technical elements of this show, they did a really good job for the most part. The sound wasn't very good. I was able to hear and understand everyone fine, but it sounded a bit muffled at time and in a way, weakened their voice. The set looked really cool as well.

WHY??????? WHY DOES THIS SHOW EXIST?????! I HAVE NEVER DISLIKED ANYTHING SO PASSIONATELY!!!! . IT'S NOT THE PRODUCTION, THE PRODUCTION QUALITY AND CAST IS GREAT, BUT THE SHOW ON IT'S OWN IS AWFUL!!!! THIS SHOW JUST SHOULDN'T EXIST TO BEGIN WITH!!

And to EPCC....WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUCH AN AWFUL SHOW????! DO SOMETHING BETTER WITH YOUR TALENT, BECAUSE YOU GUYS HAVE A LOT OF TALENT, BUT THIS SHOW MISUSES THAT TALENT!

1 out of 5. The one star is for the production and cast. The show on its own ruined it for me. Only go see it to support the talent that is onstage.
