Local Review: The El Paso Playhouse's Production of Josefina Lopez's "Real Women Have Curves"
For the past month or so, the El Paso Playhouse has been performing a wonderful production of Josefina Lopez's Real Women Have Curves. Unfortunately, by the time this review is published the production will be closed, so everyone will have to take my word that it was such a lovely production with a legitimately talented cast.
Real Women Have Curves is a play by Josefina Lopez about 5 immigrant women (one of them, Estela, is undocumented) who work in a dress factory. Throughout the course of a week, we see the women bonding, arguing, and gossiping, all while working to meet a very difficult deadline for a large order of dresses. Real Women Have Curves really is an entertaining show. It was so easy to become invested in the story and all of the characters because of the excellently crafted script and the sublime performances of all of the women in the cast. The cast consisted of Abgail Moreno (Ana, the protagonist), Claudia Yoli Ferla (Estella), Lorena Soto (Carmen, Estella's mother), Eurydice Saucedo (Pancha), and Cristina Zermeno (Rosali). Each member of the cast was wonderfully suited to their role and they truly complemented each other throughout the entire show. The chemistry they had really is the heart of the entire show.
In addition to playing one of the roles, Eurydice Saucedo did a really spot on job directing the show. You could really tell that everyone onstage had a innate understanding and appreciation of the show and it's message. This production went off without a hitch. If it was still running, this is absolutely a show I would recommend. It is funny, heartwarming, and sad all at the same time. In fact, if I were able too, I think I would see it again. So at the end of the day, here is what I say: The El Paso Playhouse's production of Real Women Have Curves was amazing! I wish I had more to say about it but that's all I really have to say this time around. It was a great show and I hope everyone got to see it before it closed.
