Local Review: Loretto Academy's Production of "Legally Blonde: The Musical"
Today, I attended the final performance of Loretto Academy's production of "Legally Blonde: The Musical"
"Legally Blonde" is a very interesting choice for a Catholic School because of the content in the show. Knowing this, I was very interested in how much of the show would be altered to make it more appropriate. Surprisingly, not much of the show was changed. However, there were small cuts that were unnoticeable if you are not familiar with the show. Such as the exclusion of the show's overture, the dance section in the song "What You Want" being cut short. The most noticeable change in the show was during the song "Ireland" when Paulette stopped singing and said "And then some things happened" and then continued singing.
The lead role of Elle Woods was played by Rebecca Filetti. Filetti gave a very good performance. She has a great voice and is a phenomenal actress. The one flaw in her performance was that she didn't belt very many of the high notes. She just went straight into head voice. She wasn't the only one who did this. Some of the sorority girls did it as well. Other than that, she was great.
Lucas Pacheco did a well job in the role of Emmett. He is a very good actor. His singing was very good in the song "Chip On My Shoulder" but the rest of his singing in his other songs fell flat.
The best performance in the show was given by Leanne Palisoc who played the role of Paulette. She has a phenomenal voice and is a killer actress. She has an excellent stage presence and I absolutely love watching her perform.
Other standouts in the cast include Cesar Mendoza as Callahan, Dominic Palisoc as Warner, and Samantha Zambrano as Vivienne.
The staging was also well done, but there were some parts that didn't really work. Another thing, I don't mind stage hands going out onstage to move a set piece during the show, but I do mind if they are wearing a black shirt that says "CREW" in big white letters. If you are gonna have stage hands go out onstage during a scene, please make sure they are wearing nothing but black.
The show really didn't have much of a set. But, they did have multiple set pieces which looked really good. All of the show's technical aspects were simple, but still very good. The microphones were also very mediocre. Some of them went on and off or just not on at all.
During the show, it felt like I was watching a bunch of theatre friends who just got together and put on a show in their garage and they had the time of their lives doing it. I applaud Loretto's theatre program for putting on such a great show. I give it 3 and a half out of five stars.
