Local Review: "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by Michele L. Vacca at Kids n Co.

  The Kids n Co. production of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was interesting. Yeah, not the good type of interesting.    I would like to start of by saying that I know many members of the cast and crew of this production, and they are all great talents. The God awful adaptation by Michele L. Vacca did not do them any favors.                  If you don't know what "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is about, then I'm sorry.   The role of Dorothy was played by Markie Condra. She had the potential to be a really amazing Dorothy, but the weak adaptation prevented Condra from being the best she can be. The material did not give Condra much to work with and the Dorothy in this adaptation came off as bland and weak, and I feel bad for anyone who is stuck playing a bland character. I also felt bad for Karly Spencer who played Toto. I feel bad for anyone who is stuck in a dog costume. I don't kno...

"The Phantom of the Opera" Restaged National Tour Review

    As I am sure you already know, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a world wide phenomenon. It is the longest running show in Broadway history, it has been translated into 13 different languages, played in 30 different countries,  has been seen by over 140 million people, and is probably one of the world's most successful musicals. It continues to run on Broadway, in the West End, on tour, and more. So it was only a matter of time before I saw it live, right?    While on a trip to Cleveland, I was able to catch the production that is currently on tour across North America and it was my first time seeing the show live and in person. This touring production is not the original Hal Prince staging, but the re-envisioned production by Laurence Connor. Meaning, that this is not the production that is currently running on Broadway or in the West End, although the original written material remains in tact. The National Tour of AN AMERICAN IN PARIS

*I wrote this right after I saw the show in February, but it is barely being published due to my poor commitment skills*    The first thing I said when the lights came up at the intermission of the national tour of An American in Paris was that the dancing was lovely. Because it really was. In fact, it was quite likely some of the best dancing I have ever seen take place in a musical. In fact, if I were to rank the best choreography I have seen in musicals, this show is easily in the top three, if not the top two. Not to mention, that the orchestrations were simply heavenly. If I were to rank orchestrations, this show would certainly be high on the list as well. However, if I were ranking this production on it's book, design, acting, and singing, then this production would easily be nearing the lower end of said rankings in each category.
